Why we started Happy Legs

The short version: we looked at what was available in Britain, found it split into two unappealing halves, and thought there ought to be something in between.

What the choice looked like

On one side, garments that looked and read as clinical. Beige, plain, sold from behind a counter with an air of something being wrong with you. Perfectly good products, and not what most people want for a long flight or a shift on their feet.

On the other, expensive brands, mostly American, with impressive marketing and shipping costs to match, sized to charts that did not always reflect the legs walking around here.

What was missing was the ordinary middle: a comfortable, decent-looking sock for people whose day is hard on their legs.

What we decided to be

Comfort, not medicine. We sell comfort and support garments. We do not make health claims and we do not stock specified clinical garments - if that is what you need, a pharmacy is the right place. Nothing here is medical advice.

Honest about sizing. Calf width decides whether a sock is comfortable, so we lead with it, publish it in centimetres, and cut genuine wide-calf styles rather than making a standard sock longer - the plus size and wide calf range is a real cut.

Not beige. A sock you like gets worn. A sock you find depressing sits in a drawer - the women's range and the men's range both reflect that.

Who we built it for

The people whose days are spent either sitting still or standing up.

Nurses on twelve-hour shifts. Teachers. Chefs and kitchen staff. Hospitality and retail. Cabin crew, and the passengers behind them. People deep into a pregnancy. Runners. Anyone who finishes the day thinking about their legs - the on-your-feet guide covers a lot of them.

The writers

The guides here are written by people who have actually done the thing. Sandra spent three decades as long-haul cabin crew. Bea worked front-of-house and as a support worker for over a decade. Gemma was a retail fit specialist for a British hosiery brand. Hannah blogged through both her pregnancies. Tom is a qualified running coach.

None of them is a clinician and all of them say so. What they write about is comfort, fit and what actually helped - the guides index has everything.

What we will not do

We will not tell you these treat anything, because that is not what we sell and it would not be true.

We will not push a firmer specification as a better product - firmer is harder to wear, not better - the mmHg guide explains why.

And we will not pretend a sock fixes a bad day. It is a sock. It helps some people feel better at the end of a long one, which is a modest and genuinely useful thing.

How we handle the boring bits

Returns are 30 days from delivery, a full refund in money rather than credit, and we pay the return postage. You can wear them, wash them and still send them back, because you cannot tell whether a sock suits you without wearing it - the returns page has the terms.

What we got wrong early on

Two things, since a story with no mistakes in it is not a story.

We under-ordered wide-calf sizes at the start, on the assumption that the middle of the range would cover most people. It did not, and the people we most wanted to serve were the ones we ran out of stock for first.

We also wrote our earliest guides too short. They answered the question and stopped, which is fine for a shop and not much use to somebody actually trying to decide. Rewriting those properly took considerably longer than writing them the first time.

What we would like you to do

Measure your calf before you buy anything. It takes two minutes and it is the difference between a sock you wear constantly and one you resent - the sizing and fit guide shows you how.

Then buy one pair rather than six, and see whether they suit you - the bestsellers are where most people start.
